Foundations Speech & Debate Program
At iGPS, Speech & Debate is central to what we do. Across three levels, our Foundations Speech & Debate program will help you build confidence, creativity, argumentative skill, and intellectual dexterity. With us, you’re guaranteed inclusion in competitive debate teams and writing competitions, and you will overcome your public speaking fears and improve your verbal fluency and written skill.

G 1 – 3 Junior Storytelling and Debate
Introductory-level Storytelling teaches young students the fundamentals of good creative thinking, storytelling, and speaking. Students will write compelling short stories, persuasive and opinion-based responses, and present creative speeches. Eventually, students will build up to an introduction to competitive debate, with an eye towards helping their confidence and critical thinking.

- How to write a personal narrative
- Spoken confidence and physical presence
- Greater understanding of effective teamwork
- Vocabulary and effective word choice
Program Deliverables
- Detailed Progress Report Snapshots every 10 weeks
- One Writing piece of 200-300 words per week (total of 30 pieces)
- 20-25 vocabulary words per week (total of 600-700 words)
- Submission to at least one creative writing contest for students
- Presentation of at least two public speeches
G 4 – 8 Intermediate Speech & Debate
The next step in our holistic program, G 4 – 8 Intermediate Speech & Debate is a bridge that connects creative thought, critical analysis, and competitive debate. Students will focus on critical thinking activities, including the building of rhetorical understanding and best practices in personal writing.

- Advanced creative storytelling, including drafting of a short story, personal narrative essay, and expository essay
- Complex thinking about global issues and current events
- Note-taking skills
- Topic analysis and rebuttal techniques
- How to adapt to different debate styles
- Public Speaking confidence and cogency
- Effective body language and presentation
- University-quality research habits
- Foundational leadership skills
Program Deliverables
- Detailed Progress Report Snapshots every 10 weeks
- One competitive debate per week, for a total of 30 debates
- Three public speaking presentations
- Entry into at least one competitive debate tournament
- Submission to at least one public speaking invitational OR creative writing contest
- 25-30 vocabulary words per week (total of 800-900 words)
G 9 – 12 Advanced Debate & Rhetorical Arts
In Advanced Debate and Rhetorical Arts, students will engage mature, contextually relevant topics, across several debate disciplines. They will be leaders and captains of our competitive teams, and will learn how to successfully channel their energy and intelligence into a more well-rounded, critical approach to debate. They will be better primed for university by building their professional networks, tapping their rhetorical and argumentative potential, and learning more about themselves in the process.

- Advanced narrative, expository, analytical, and research-based writing
- University-quality essays
- Advanced debate formats and strategies
- How to confidently present speeches
- Better body language, cadence, and flow in speeches
- Advanced rhetorical strategies
- Advanced public speaking modes and styles
- Advanced personal editing strategies
Program Deliverables:
- Detailed Progress Report Snapshots every 10 weeks
- One competitive debate per week, for a total of 30 debates
- Three public speaking presentations
- Two university-level ‘unit essays’, each a total of 500-600 words
- Entry into at least one competitive debate tournament
- Submission to at least one public speaking invitational OR creative writing contest
- 25-30 vocabulary words per week (total of 800-900 words)
